TIMAHOE

Map Reference: S537902

St Mochua founded a monastery at Timahoe in the 7th century. The Round Tower is about 29m high and is one of the best preserved in the country. It features a very fine double Romanesque doorway about 5m above ground level. There are four receding orders divided in two pairs by a narrow alcove in the centre. The capitals of the pillars are decorated with human masks with intertwined beards and hair. There is a round-headed window at the second floor of the tower and four pointed windows at the top. It was probably built in the 12th century. The medieval church beside the tower was later fortified.
